The pattern in this painting is a complex variation of a sixfold geometry in which a circle is divided into six by other circles of the same size. This is the basis of many patterns in Islamic design. Here it is overlaid on two other Islamic patterns  creating an arabesque, ornamental design of intertwined, flowing lines. The complex interplay this produces is reminiscent of quantum field theory which describes the interaction of the fundamental forces that create the universe we see and feel.
