We thought we knew everything, but there were loose ends. We made much progress, but snags would appear. We pulled on the threads and a patch would unravel. A riddle within a riddle. Truth out of reach.

The numbers were spinning a lie, exposed by our own observation. A dark energy must dominate our world.

Now we must forget everything.

What do we know with absolute certainty? We know there is space. We know there is energy.

Enough to begin.

Imagine there is a structure for everything - a shape that is the underlying form for all of space. What properties would it have, what would it look like, how would you find it?

In 1887, Lord Kelvin published a hurriedly-written paper 'On the Division of Space with Minimum Partitional Areas'. In it, he tackled the problem of an 'all-pervading ether', a structure for space that allowed light to transmit through it. Kelvin's solution - a doubly curved, truncated octahedron – stood as the optimum solution to the problem for more than 100 years.
